Tyson Thompson also tried his luck in the first inning before Garrett Alwert finally shut the Bears down. In all California had nine hits in the opening inning, including doubles by Clint Hoover and Horwitz and a triple off the bat of Connor Jackson.
Alwert, who recorded the final out of the first inning, went the rest of the way for WSU in his best outing of the season, giving up just three hits in 7.1 innings. He also struck out five and did not issue a walk.
The Cougars only run came in the sixth when Richard Hall singled to lead off the inning and came home on Stefan Bailie's fly out to center.
