8th-Ranked Women's Tennis Preps For LMU, UCLA

This Week -- 8th-ranked USC women's tennis enters this week with a 12-5 overall record and 1-1 mark in the Pac-10. The Women of Troy face nonconference opponent Loyola Marymount (6-5) on Wednesday, March 28, then host rival No. 27 UCLA (4-10, 2-0 Pac-10) on Friday, March 30. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium and start at 1:30 p.m.
ITA Rankings -- USC moved up four spots to No. 8 in this week's ITA team rankings.
USC vs. LMU, UCLA -- USC is 10-0 all-time against Loyola Marymount since their first meeting in 1987. Last season, the Trojans defeated the Lions 8-0. The Women of Troy own a slight edge over the Bruins in the all-time series. USC is 31-23 in matches against UCLA since 1977. Last season, UCLA won both meetings 5-4 and 6-3.
The Last Time Against the Bruins -- USC broke a two-match losing streak against the Bruins with a 5-2 win on March 3. With decisive wins at courts two and three, the Trojans earned the doubles point to enter singles play with a 1-0 lead. USC clinched the match with four, two-set victories at No. 1, 3, 5 and 6, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Maureen Diaz at the third court over Lauren Fisher.
USC News & Notes -- The Trojans have not lost a match this season after winning the doubles point (11-0 after winning doubles point)... Maureen Diaz owns the team's best record so far with a .767 win percentage... Both Diaz and Jewel Peterson have won 23 matches this season ... This year's roster features no seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen... USC's top-six are all underclassmen.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- Pepperdine's Anh Nguyen defeated Bernadette Bayani at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (4) to clinch a hard-fought 4-3 win for Pepperdine on Wednesday (March 21). USC surrendered the critical doubles point to start the match then saw the Waves jump to a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles before Nguyen secured the match victory. The Trojans rallied to win two more matches in three sets when Anita Loyola defeated Cintia Tortorella 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, and Melissa Esmero came back after dropping the first set against Maren Mueller 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his sixth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2000 Trojans to a 18-9 overall record, a No. 11 final team ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last nine years, he has compiled a 152-83 (.655) overall record and his teams have made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
