Field Announced For NCAA West Regional Gymnastics Championships

The field for the NCAA West Regional Women's Gymnastics Championship has been announced. Joining defending NCAA champion and top-ranked UCLA on Saturday, Apr. 7 will be 11th-ranked BYU, 13th-ranked Oregon State, California, Boise State and Cal State Fullerton. The meet will take place in Pauley Pavilion starting at 6:00 pm.
In addition, five at-large individual all-around competitors and four at-large individual event specialists will compete. The all-around qualifiers are Dani Albright, Shirla Choy and Kimmy Cianci of San Jose State and Flora Bare and Ericka Ruelas of UC Davis. Event specialists are Alison Siegel of Seattle Pacific (vault), Toni Peterson of Sacramento State (uneven bars), Cassie Althauser of Seattle Pacific (balance beam) and Jami Scoville of Sacramento State (floor exercise).
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors not from an advancing team from the regional will receive a berth in the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Athens, GA Apr. 19-21. In addition, individual event winners not from a qualifying team or all-arounder will advance if their score is 9.8 or higher.
UCLA, which will begin the regional meet on the floor exercise, has a star-studded lineup, led by the nation's top all-around gymnast, Mohini Bhardwaj. She is the defending regional all-around, bars and beam champion. Also on the Bruin squad are 2000 Olympians Jamie Dantzscher, Kristen Maloney and Yvonne Tousek.
Last season, UCLA won the 2000 NCAA West Regional Championship a year ago to qualify for the national championships. At the NCAA Championships, the Bruins hit all 48 routines over two days to win their second NCAA team title in four years.
