March 26, 2001
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In its final week of preparation before Pac-10 play opens Friday, the University of Oregon softball team started with a split against Santa Clara at Marsalli Park in Moraga, Calif., Monday. The Ducks (21-16) began the day with a 1-0 loss to the Broncos and ended with a 3-1 victory.
'I was very pleased with the character we showed today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'It was tough to come back after the first game, which we should have won, but the team did a great job of getting focused.'
Junior Connie McMurren (8-7) picked up the loss in the first game. McMurren came into the game in the top of the fifth inning for sophomore Lisa Wangler, who struck out four and walked three in the first four innings.
Both teams were scoreless through five innings, but in the bottom of the sixth inning Santa Clara shortstop Tracie Hall drove in the Broncos' lone run.
In Game 2, sophomore pitcher Andrea Vidlund (8-3) picked up the win. The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a single by junior Missy Coe drove in Lynsey Haij and Alyssa Laux. Santa Clara scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, to narrow the gap, 2-1. Oregon scored the only other run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Kelly Planche.
