WSU Women's Rowing Captures Fawley Cup to Open Spring Season
March 26, 2001
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - - The first regatta of the spring season ends with the Washington State women's rowing team capturing their fourth consecutive Fawley Cup.
The top race of the day featured WSU's varsity eight and second varsity eight versus the varsity eight of Gonzaga. WSU's varsity boat finished first, but a protest was filed on the results of the other two. The winner of the second eight of WSU, and the varsity eight of Gonzaga would qualify for the Opening Day Regatta on May 5, hosted by the University of Washington.
'The varsity boat clearly finished first in the race,' said head coach Tammy Crawford. 'The coxswain for our second boat noticed possible impedement by the Gonzaga boat, so they will re-race on Tuesday April 3, on the Snake River.'
WSU lost in the varsity four and novice eight races to Gonzaga, but was victorious when the novice boats rowed in the second eight and third eight.
