Ferguson, OSU In First At Dr. Thompson's Golf Tournament
March 27, 2001
WAIMANALO, Haw. - - Oregon State golfer Stacie Ferguson led an OSU charge that saw the Beavers claim the top spot on the leaderboard after 18 holes on Tuesday at the Dr. Thompson's Rainbow Tournament at the par-72 Olomana Golf Links.
OSU owns a one-stroke lead over defending champion and No. 2 Arizona, as the Beavers shot 299 in relatively mild conditions on what can be a windy course. The Beavers also lead No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 15 Oklahoma State by four and five shots. A total of nine schools are within 10 shots of the Beavers.
Ferguson leads the individual field after shooting a 70. Ferguson went out in 37, but closed her round with a 33 to take a one-stroke lead into Wednesday's second round.
'Stacie Ferguson played very solid for us today,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'This was a good day for us. Now we just need to take it one shot at a time, and they're learning to do that. I think the positive mental approach is really kicking in, and they'll only get better if that's the case. They're working at it and taking advantage of it.'
None of the Beavers rose above 80, as Laura Skinner and Ashlei Pendleton both carded 76 and are tied for 17th. Skinner had five birdies on her round, but a few double bogies kept her from shooting a lower number. Pendleton struggled with her round, but scrambled well enough to turn in a solid 38-38--76.
Carina Olsson is one shot back in a tie for 26th after a 77. The senior struggled on the front nine, shooting a 41, but came up with some clutch shots to come in with a 36.
Bridget Bieth shot 79 to round out the scoring in what was the Beavers' second-lowest round of the year.
The field will play the second round Wednesday, and wrap up the tournament on Thursday with a final 18.
'They're excited, but they also realize this is just the first day,' Lakowske said. 'If they keep the same mental approach, they should be fine.'
