Stanford, Ca - One of the nation's best collegiate and high school track & field meets in the country will be held this Saturday and Sunday (March 31, April 1) at Cobb Track & Angell Field as the Stanford Invitational takes center stage.

This meet always features several Olympians and this year is no exception. The list includes Stanford's Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember, both semifinalists in the 1,500 meters in Sydney. For Jennings and Stember, the 2000 Olympics was the culmination of one of the most successful seasons ever by a pair of college athletes from one school. During the 2000 season, Jennings and Stember placed first and second, respectively, in the NCAA indoor mile and NCAA outdoor 1,500 meters. Then during the summer of 2000, Jennings and Stember finished first and third at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento. .

College and open athletes begin competition on Saturday (noon) while collegiate and open running events begin at 2:05 p.m. The distance carnival highlights the action on Saturday evening. .

Nearly 3,000 high school athletes from throughout California and the western United States will compete on Saturday (3/27). The prepsters start the day at 8:30 a.m. with the boy's 400 meter hurdles along with the girl's long jump and discus. .

On Sunday, April 1, this day will be reserved exclusively for college and open athletes. The field and running events begin at 9:00 a.m. .

Collegiate schools competing include defending NCAA men's champion Stanford, Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Purdue, Missouri, LSU, Colorado State, Arkansas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Tulane, Brigham Young, Georgetown, and Pac-10 rivals California, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, USC, Washington and Washington State. .

Top individual competitors include Washington sprinter JaWarren Hooker, sprinter Jeff Laynes, Eugene Swift in the hurdles, former Cal star Rod Jett in the hurdles, Andrea Williams in the sprints, Nicole Teter and Cal's Erin Belger in the 800 meters, Colorado State's Bryan Berryhill in the 1,500 meters, Arkansas' Ryan Travis and Sharif Karie in the 1,500 meters, Cal's Bolota Asmerom in the 1,500 meters, Stanford's Lauren Fleshman in the 1,500 meters, Korene Hinds of Kansas State in the 1,500 meters, David Kimani of Alabama in the 5,000 meters, Kim Fitchen and Arkansas' Lillie Kleinmann in the 5,000 meters, Arizona State's Kelly MacDonald, Arizona's Tara Chaplin, and Amy Mortimer of Kansas State in the 5,000 meters, Ryan Shay of Notre Dame in the 10,000 meters, Tara Northcutt of BYU and Leigh Daniel of Texas Tech in the 10,000 meters, Charles Clinger of Weber State and Michael Ponikvar of Stanford in the high jump, Suzy Powell in the discus, Dean Starkey and Scott Slover in the pole vault, and Erica Wheeler in the javelin. .
