UCLA Baseball Falls To USD, 9-3

SAN DIEGO - The USD Toreros handed the visiting UCLA Bruins (17-8) a 9-3 setback today at Cunningham Stadium.
The Toreros jumped out to a 9-0 lead through four innings, then went on to the 9-3 victory. USD scored 2 runs in the first inning off of Bruin starter Bobby Roe (3-2). Mike McCoy opened the inning with a leadoff bunt single, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Josh Harris also crossed the plate on Joey Prast's RBI groundout to second base. In the second inning, USD's Tony Perez opened with a single, stole second, moved to third on Luis Diaz Miron's bunt single, and scored on Mike McCoy's sacrifice fly to right field.
USD scored 4 runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead. USD's final two runs came in the 4th inning -- Mike McCoy and Josh Harris tallied back-to-back singles, and after a Jason Marian fly out, both stole bases to move up to second and third. After Greg Sain walked to load the bases, Joey Prast's sacrifice fly to center scored McCoy, and Joe Lima's single to left scored Harris.
David Dunn started for the Toreros and limited the Bruins to 2 hits and no runs through 2.2 innings. With two outs in the third and the bases loaded, Dunn gave way to Mike Oseguera who got Brian Baron to groundout to second to end the inning. Tim Dean (2-0) relieved Oseguera in the fourth with one out and runners on first and second, he got Josh Arhart to line-out into a double play to end the inning. Dean pitched 3.2 innings, scattering 2 hits and giving up just 1 run to improve his record to 2-0.
Tony Perez pitched the final two innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs to the Bruins. In the top of the 8th, Brian Baron singled to center field, and Eric Reece followed with a single to center. After Randall Shelley struck out, Brandon Averill pinch-hit for John Campanella and delivered a double down the left field line that scored Baron and advanced Reece to third. Reece scored on Casey Grzecka's infield groundout to the right side.
For the game, UCLA was paced by Josh Canales (3-for-4) and Brian Baron (2-for-5, 1 run). The Toreros were paced by sophomore second baseman Mike McCoy (Grossmont HS) who was 4-for-4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, freshman leftfielder Joey Prast (Poway HS) who was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI, and Joe Lima (Mira Mesa HS) who finished 2-for-4 with 1 run and 2 RBI.
