OSU Finishes Sixth At Dr. Thompson Tournament

March 29, 2001

WAIMANALO, Haw. - - The Oregon State women's golf team took a huge step toward qualifying for the NCAA West Regional when it finished tied for sixth at the Dr. Thompson Rainbow Tournament on Thursday. The Beavers shot 313 in Thursday's final round for a score of 919 over the 54 holes at the par-72 Olomana Golf Links.

Sophomore Stacie Ferguson had the best tournament of her career, as she tied for eighth with a 8-over 224. Ferguson led the tournament after the first round when she shot 70, but was unable to get on a roll over the next two rounds as she shot a 77 each day. Ferguson's eighth-place finish was the highest of any OSU golfer this year, and was the best since Anne Brooksby took eighth at last year's Rainbow Wahine Fall Classic.

'Stacie played solid all week,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'She really hit the ball well today, but didn't put as well the last two days as she did the first day.

'We beat who we had to beat,' Lakowske said in reference to beating Colorado State and Colorado, two key teams OSU needed to beat to qualify for the regionals, which will be held in May at OSU's home course, Trysting Tree. 'We can correct the mistakes we made this week, but we're going to have to get it together pretty soon. The next few weeks will be crucial, so we'll learn from this experience and build on it.'

The Beavers got solid play from sophomore Bridget Bieth, who shot 229. Bieth carded a 76 in the final round.

Carina Olsson and Ashlei Pendleton shot 234 and 235 respectively, to tie for 31st and 34th. Both shot 80 on Thursday, along with Laura Skinner, who tied for 49th with a 239.

Oklahoma State took the team title with an 895 to edge out Arizona by three shots.

Arizona's Natalie Gulbis won medalist honors by shooting even-par 216.

The Beavers come back to Corvallis and make a quick turnaround, as they play the Ping/Arizona State Invitational April 6-8.
