California Rallies To Beat UW, 8-6

SEATTLE - Down 6-1 through six innings, California rallied for two in the seventh and five in theeighth to hand the Washington baseball team an 8-6 loss in a Pac-10 Conference gameFriday night at Husky Ballpark.

Cal improved to 16-14 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10 win the win. The UW fell to 14-8, 2-5.

After UW shortstop Tila Reynolds led off the sixth with a solo homer to increase the UWlead to 6-1, Cal rallied for two runs with two out in the seventh to close the gap. A walkand a single put two runners aboard for the Bears when, after a wild pitch moved therunners up, a chopper over third base from Horwitz scored two runs.

In the eighth, the Bears loaded the bases on two singles and an error before Huskyfreshman reliever Trevor Gibson walked in a run. Scott Robertson then came on to faceBen Conley, who singled up the middle to score two more to tie the game at 6-6. A wildpitch on a pitch out then allowed Creighton Kahoalii to score before a sacrific fly platedConley to make it 8-6, Bears.

Cal starter Trevor Hutchinson allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits over fiveinnings. Reliever Blake Read (1-0) earned the win with three scoreless innings while MattBrown picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the ninth.

Junior Shawn Kohn, a righty from Woodinville, made his first career start for the Huskies,but didn't figure in the decision, working six innings, allowing one unearned run on fivehits while fanning five. He had made 39 relief appearances in his UW career before gettingthe start Friday night.

Reynolds finished the day 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two stolenbases. He leads the Huskies with his four home runs this season.

The Huskies and Bears continue the three-game series with 1:00 p.m. games on Saturdayand Sunday. Both will air live on KSRB AM-1150.
