No. 9 Softball Wins Pac-10 Opener, 4-2, Over No. 14 Oregon State

SALEM, Ore. - The ninth-ranked Arizona State softball team (26-8, 1-0 Pac-10) won their opening Pac-10 game with a 4-2 victory over 14th-ranked Oregon State (29-12-1, 0-1 Pac-10) in Salem, Oregon. The game was played in Salem due to ongoing construction of OSU's new softball complex.
Oregon State struck first in the third inning when Shawna Feldt hit a solo home run to right field.
Erica Beach started the game, going the first three innings. Kristen Swetel then came in with two on and no outs to retire the side. Swetel (4-1) pitched the next three innings before giving way to Kirsten Voak who finished the final inning for her third save on the year.
The Sun Devils rallied for three runs in the fifth inning. Kristin Farber opened the frame by being hit by a pitch. Nichole Thompson then sacrificed Farber to second. Kara Brun followed with an RBI single to left field to score Farber. Phelan Wright then doubled to left field to advance Brun to third. Swetel added to the score, and helped her own cause, with a single to right field, scoring both Brun and Wright.
ASU tallied one more run in the seventh when Voak hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Wright from third.
Oregon State posted one more run in the seventh off of another solo home run, but Voak came in for the final three batters to end the threat.
Up next, Arizona State faces Oregon on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. PT.
