Women's Swimmers Win 800-Meter Freestyle Relay Title At U.S. Nationals

March 31, 2001

A day after the USC men's team won a national title in the 800-meter freestyle relay, Troy's women's team matched the effort, winning the event on Saturday (March 31) at the 2001 U.S. Spring National Championships in Austin, Texas.

Sophomore Michala Kwasny, sophomore Jennifer Parmenter, senior Corrie Murphy and freshman Jana Krohn won the 800m free relay in 8:14.90, touching first ahead of second-place Auburn (8:17.78).

Once again, former Trojan Lindsay Benko had a good day. She tied for second in the 100-meter freestyle in 55.51 with Maritza Correia.

Because the top two in each event qualify for the 2001 U.S. World Championship team, Benko and Correia competed in a swim-off to determine who got the second slot. Benko won the race, swimming a 55.28 to Correia's 55.42.
