Women's Tennis Snaps Losing Streak In Win Over Pacific, 6-1

April 1, 2001

EUGENE, Ore - After eleven straight losses, the University of Oregon women's tennis team put together a terrific performance to earn a 6-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers on Sunday. The Ducks swept doubles and lost only one singles match on their way to the victory.

In singles, Oregon sophomore Jeanette Mattsson made a spectacular comeback after missing a great deal of the season due to injury. Mattsson blanked Pacific's Melinda Kocsis, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position. Freshman Courtney Nagle also had a resounding victory over Sandija Zarina of the Tigers, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, the Ducks swept all three matches from the Tigers. The Ducks' tandem of Monika Gieczys and Nagle put away Pacific's duo of Christiane Barthel and Diana D'Audney, 8-1 at No. 1.

'I'm very pleased with the effort today,' said Oregon head coach Jack Griffin. 'They are still fighting, digging and believing that tomorrow is going to be a better day. It's nice to get a team victory, we play a very difficult schedule. This win will help us going into our long road trip.'

Up next, Oregon takes on Tulsa, on Friday, April 13, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
