Men's Golf In Seventh At Western Intercollegiate
April 2, 2001
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - - Anthony Arvidson shot a 69 in Monday's second round of the Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament, and is tied for eighth with 18 holes to play on Tuesday. Oregon State is tied with Stanford for seventh after shooting 293-295--588 in the opening rounds. Only nine shots separate OSU from third-place Pacific.
Arvidson, the lone senior on the squad, shot a 73 in the morning round, and stands at two over par 142 at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. Arvidson has a string of ten consecutive top-25 finishes - a span that includes four top-10s.
'Anthony had a couple of birdies coming in on the second round, which really helped us as a team,' OSU coach Mike Ketcham said. 'He continues to play big for us when we need him, and you expect that of him as a senior.'
David Yarnes shot 72-75--147 on Monday to forge a tie for 25th.
'David probably got the most out of his round of anyone on the team in the first round,' Ketcham commented.
'The greens are very, very fast,' Ketcham said. 'We have to be extremely patient on these greens, and I think a couple of our players lost their patience at times today. You really can't do that on this course.
'We've got a chance to be in the hunt tomorrow, so we'll just take it one shot at a time and one hole at a time and see what happens.'
San Diego State's Lars Johansson leads the individual competition after taming the course with a 65-67--132, and Oregon leads the field after posting a 284-287--571.
