Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week (4/2/01)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON STATE junior second baseman Bookie Gates has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and OREGON STATE senior left-hander Scott Nicholson has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 27-April 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Gates, from Seattle, Wash., batted .714 (10-for-21) in the Cougar's three-game series against UCLA. In the first game of the series he went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. In a double-header against the Bruins he went 8-for-9, with two doubles and a home run. He also scored three times in those games and drove in six runs.

Nicholson, from Longview, Wash., pitched his third consecutive complete game and second straight shutout with an 8-0 win over Arizona. He kept the Wildcats to only five hits while striking out four batters and walking none. He improved his record to 6-1 and lowered his earned run average to 2.90 with the victory.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Gates in his career, and the 55th selection all-time for WASHINGTON STATE. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Nicholson in his career, and the 50th selection all-time for OREGON STATE.
