WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE pitcher/designated player Kristen Swetel has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week while STANFORD pitcher Dana Sorensen was named Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 26 - Apr. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Swetel, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz., posted a shutout over No. 14 Oregon State (Mar. 30) and produced game-winning hits in both of Arizona State's victories over the weekend. Swetel went 1-0, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up just one run on six hits. She also went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and five RBI. Swetel is now batting .375 on the season.
Sorensen, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., went 2-0 in the opening weekend of Pac-10 play. Sorensen knocked off top-ranked and previously undefeated UCLA 1-0 (Mar. 30), ending the Bruins' 35-game winning streak. She also went on to defeat No. 15 Washington (Apr. 1), striking out 14 Husky batters in the process. On the weekend, Sorensen struck out 21 batters, allowing just two walks and five hits in 14.0 innings of work. Sorensen is now 17-1 on the year, with an 0.24 ERA.
