Oregon Softball Drops Two Games To Portland State
April 3, 2001
PORTLAND - Taking a break from the Pacific-10 Conference didn't turn out to be the vacation the Oregon softball team was looking for. The Ducks (23-21) traveled north to face Portland State in a doubleheader Tuesday before continuing conference play against No. 3 California and No. 5 Stanford this weekend and dropped both games of a doubleheader at Erv Lind Stadium.
The Ducks were tied or carried a lead heading into the seventh inning of both games, but Portland State capitalized on its home field advantage and went on to win the first game 4-2 before taking the second game 8-7.
'This was not what we expected today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'Obviously we're very disappointed about giving up the lead and feel these are two games we should have won.'
Despite the stinging losses, Oregon senior Triawn Custer hit two home runs in Game 2 to tie the Oregon record (33) for career home runs. Custer has seven home runs this season. Sophomore Andrea Vidlund also took part in the home run derby, smashing her fourth home run of the season in Game 1 and adding her fifth of the season in Game 2. Vidlund finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.
But Portland State was also showing offensive prowess - left fielder Kiauna Anderson hit a two-run walk off home run in the first game to give Portland State the victory and the Viking's hit three homers in the second game to keep themselves in the game.
Vidlund (9-4) picked up the loss in Game 1 and junior Connie McMurren (8-11) fell in the second game.
