Lorenzo in Sixth at Halfway Point of Texas Relays Decathlon

April 4, 2001

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Oregon juniors Santiago Lorenzo and Billy Pappas opened their decathlon seasons Thursday at the Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

After five events Lorenzo ranked sixth overall and fifth among collegians with a score of 3,877 points, while Pappas stood in 16th with 3,024 points after no-heighting in the high jump.

Breaking down his events, Lorenzo ranked third among the 18 competitors in the 400 (49.26), fourth in the shot put (44-0), fifth in the 100 (11.11), eighth in the long jump (22-4 1/4) and 10th in the high jump with a new personal best (6-3 1/2). Lorenzo's halfway mark Thursday trailed his first-day personal best total by only 74 points - a tally of 3,951 from last year's Texas Relays.

Pappas ranked fourth in the shot put with a new personal best by almost two feet (45-1), sixth in the long jump (22-6 1/2), 11th in the 100 (11.30), and 13th in the 400 (51.79).

Overall, unattached entrant Trafton Rodgers paced the field with 4,165 points and owned the day's best marks in the 100 (10.82), 400 (48.82) and shot put (47-1 3/4), the second-best mark in the long jump (23-2 1/2), and the third-best mark in the high jump (6-7). Minnesota's Lyndon McDowell (3,986) and BYU's Curis Puglsey (3,942) trailed in second and third place, respectively.

On Friday, the 10-event competition concludes with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500, with Lorenzo likely to gain noticeable ground on the field because the javelin and pole vault are among his top specialties.

Also likely to compete Friday are freshmen Jake Garlick and Brandon Holliday and sophomore Tim Overfield in prelims of the 400 hurdles, and sophomore Adam Kriz in the hammer.
