San Diego Natives Lift Baseball To 2-1 Win At San Diego State

April 4, 2001

SAN DIEGO - Senior shortstop Seth Davidson's (San Diego/USDHS) infield single scored freshman Michael Moon in the 10th inning Tuesday and the No. 12 USC Trojans defeated the San Diego State Aztecs, 2-1, in non-conference action at Tony Gwynn Stadium. USC has now won six of its last seven games.

Mark Prior (Bonita/USDHS) improved to 8-1 on the season by pitching in the ninth inning for USC (21-11). Sophomore Brian Bannister retired the side in order in the bottom of the 10th to pick up his third save of the season as San Diego State fell to 19-13 on the season.

Moon led off the 10th with his second hit of the game, a single to left. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rob Garibaldi. Davidson then hit a sharp ground ball to second that took a wild hop and bounced off second baseman Ryan Wilson's shoulder into shallow center, plating Moon with the winning run.

The Aztecs had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run at second, but Sean Pierce was caught stealing at third as Prior threw a strike to Moon for the out to end the inning.

USC got its first run in the fifth with the help of Mother Nature. With two outs, Moon lofted a fly ball to left. At the last second, a stiff wind blew the ball away from a diving Andy Litteral for a wind-blown double. Moon scored on an infield single by Rob Garibaldi.

San Diego State answered in the seventh when Wilson hit a fly ball double down the right field line, scoring Pierce.

The loss spoiled an otherwise strong effort by San Diego State's Ben Julianel. Julianel took the loss last Wednesday in a 16-7 loss against USC at Dedeaux Field after giving up five runs in one inning. He bounced back Tuesday by allowing only six hits in nine innings. He struck out seven and allowed only one walk.

Rik Currier pitched four no-hit innings as the starter for the Trojans. He struck out six batters. Anthony Reyes took over in the fifth and struck out eight in four innings of work.

The Trojans resume Pac-10 Conference play with a weekend series against No. 10 Arizona State, beginning on Friday (April 6) at 6 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday (April 7) and Sunday (April 8) with 1 p.m. starts for both games. All three games will be broadcast live on
