April 4, 2001
Anaheim, Calif. --- Atherton Communications and Ogden Facility Mgmt Corp, producers of the John R. Wooden Classic, announced today that 2001 NCAA finalist, the University of Arizona Wildcats, will play Purdue University in the first game of the 8th annual men's basketball invitational, immediately followed by the UCLA Bruins against this year's NIT finalist, the University of Alabama.
The Wooden Classic doubleheader will be held at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim Saturday, December 8th. The Arizona vs. Purdue game is a rematch of the inaugural Wooden Tradition game last year in Indianapolis, where the Boilermakers upset the nation's #1 ranked Wildcats. The UCLA vs. Alabama game is a first ever showdown between two former Bruin assistant coaches from the 1995 NCAA Championship team, Crimson Tide head coach Mark Gottfried and UCLA head coach Steve Lavin.
Established in 1994, the Expanets John R. Wooden Classic is an annual tribute to the legendary former coach and the excellence he personifies. The event traditionally hosts college basketball's elite programs. The Wooden Classic is a celebration of the game of basketball and the activities benefit Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC). In addition to the doubleheader, this year's events will include the Wooden Classic Golf Tournament, December 6th at Pelican Hill Golf Club and the Wooden Classic Benefit dinner, December 7th.
