16th-Ranked Trojans Travel To Bay Area

This Week -- No. 16 USC women's tennis enters the week with a 14-5 overall record and 2-1 mark in the Pac-10. On Friday, April 6, the Women of Troy travel to Cal for a 1:30 p.m. match against the 6th-ranked Bears (12-2, 4-2). On Saturday, April 7, USC faces No. 1 Stanford (17-0, 6-0) at Noon. Neither match will count against the team's conference record.
ITA Rankings -- After dropping to 18th last week, the Trojans jumped two spots to No. 16 in this week's ITA poll. Jewel Peterson ranks 27th in singles, while she and Tiffany Brymer rank 31st in doubles.
USC News & Notes -- With its second win over UCLA on Friday (March 30), the Trojans swept the Bruins for the first time since 1988... The Trojans have not lost a match this season after winning the doubles point (13-0 after winning doubles point)... Maureen Diaz owns the team's best record so far with a 25-7 mark and .781 win percentage... This year's roster features no seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen... USC's top-six are all underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores).
USC vs. Cal, Stanford -- The Trojans are 20-19 all-time against Cal and endured two losses last season to the Golden Bears: 5-4 at home and 1-5 on the road. Against Stanford, the all-time record stands at 40-17 in the Cardinal's favor. Last season, USC dropped a 6-1 match at home and fell 6-3 on the road.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC held Loyola Marymount without a single set victory en route to a 7-0 win on March 28. For the fourth time this season, USC won all three doubles matches to enter singles play with a 1-0 lead. Tiffany Brymer was the first off the court for the Trojans with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Milica Cukulic and Melissa Esmero added the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Julie Hladik. LMU was unable to win a set as USC won all six singles matches with two-set victories.
USC handed UCLA its first conference loss of the season with a 6-1 defeat on March 30. After winning all three doubles matches, Esmero and Bernadette Bayani each quickly added two points for the Trojans with straight-set victories over UCLA's Chelsea Godbey and Jennifer Donahue. Needing only one more point to secure the win, Maureen Diaz defeated Lauren Fisher 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3. It completed the Trojans' first season sweep over the Bruins in 13 years.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his sixth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2000 Trojans to a 18-9 overall record, a No. 11 final team ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last nine years, he has compiled a 154-83 (.650) overall record and his teams have made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
