No. 16 Softball Gets Back On Winning Track With 6-0 Victory Over Saint Mary's

April 5, 2001

After losing three-straight and dropping two spots to No. 16 in the national polls, Oregon State's softball team got back on the winning track with a 6-0 victory at Saint Mary's College Thursday evening.

With a question remaining in the scorebook, Oregon State scored Crystal Draper earning a no-hitter and charging an error while the official book, kept by Saint Mary's indicated a fourth inning single by the Gaels. The no-hitter would have been Draper's second of the season.

'Crystal threw a nice ball game and did a great job,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'She kept them from getting anything going offensively.'

The victory improves Draper's record to 17-7 on the season while Oregon State improves to 30-13-1.

The Beavers got on the board first in the second inning when Steph Adams hit a one-out solo home run, her fourth of the season. Clare Burnum followed with a base hit to right field, followed by a single to left by Shelly Prochaska. A double to right field by Cara Maxey scored OSU's second run of the inning, putting the Beavers ahead 2-0.

Oregon State would strike again in the fourth and seventh innings adding two runs in each.

'We scored consistently throughout the game,' said Walker. 'We were very balanced and relied heavily on the middle of our line-up.'

Saint Mary's senior Jennifer Fawkes broke up the no-hitter with an infield hit and the only other Gael to reach base was Holly Ferreira, who walked in the fifth inning.

Burnum finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate for the Beavers with a double and two runs scored. Prochaska went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Maxey went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

Oregon State returns to action Friday afternoon in search of its first Pacific-10 Conference win with a 2 p.m. showdown against No. 4 California.
