UCLA Men's Soccer Announces Remainder Of Spring Schedule
April 5, 2001
The UCLA men's soccer team, which is currently 1-0-1 in spring play, has announced the remainder of its spring schedule. The Bruins' next game will be versus Westmont College on Saturday, Apr. 7 at 1:00 pm on the North Athletic Field. The game is a doubleheader with the UCLA women's soccer team, which plays Florida State at 10:30 am.
Also coming up for the Bruin men is a pair of games on Saturday, Apr. 14 at UC Irvine. UCLA will first play the host Anteaters at 10:00 am, followed by a 2:00 pm contest against Cal State Northridge.
On Tuesday, Apr. 17, UCLA will meet a few familiar faces on the U.S. U-20 National Team. Bruin freshmen Nelson Akwari, DJ Countess, and Alex Yi will be on the opposing side as members of the U-20 team. The game will take place at the ARCO Training Center in San Diego at 2:00 pm.
The Bruins will face a group of UCLA soccer alumni on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 1:00 pm on the North Athletic Field.
Closing out the spring schedule is a cancer benefit game at Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Apr. 27 at 7:00 pm. The game will be supporting the Mikella McAuley Bone Marrow Drive. Mikella is a five-year-old Bakersfield girl who is suffering from a form of leukemia. The first bone marrow screening tested over 900 people and ultimately proved unsuccessful. The game will raise funds to support the next screening on Saturday, May 12 at Bakersfield's Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center. This will be the second time in four years that the two teams have met for a good cause. UCLA and Cal State Bakersfield participated in a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in March of 1998. Over 1,300 fans braved a cold, rainy night to see the two teams battle to a 1-1 draw.
UCLA has fared well in its spring games so far. On Feb. 24, Cliff McKinley and Ryan Futagaki scored to give UCLA a 2-0 win over Loyola Marymount. Zach Wells earned the shutout. The Bruins tied the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-1 on Mar. 2, receiving a goal from Matt Taylor.
