WSU Defeats Gonzaga In Re-Race At The Snake

April 4, 2001

PULLMAN, Wash. - In a re-race from the Fawley Cup March 26 at Silver Lake, the Washington State women's junior varsity eight crew defeated Gonzaga University, April 3, at the Snake River.

WSU clocked a winning time of 6:35.5 while Gonzaga finished with a 6:41.7 mark. With the win, the Cougars' junior varsity eight qualifies for the Opening Day Regatta May 5 hosted by the University of Washington at Montlake Cut.

In the original race March 26, the Cougars' varsity eight easily captured the competition, but WSU's JV boat filed a protest of impediment against the Bulldogs, who had finished six seconds ahead of the Cougars' JV boat. WSU coach Tammy Crawford and Gonzaga coach Glenn Putyrae did not notice any infractions from their vantage point on the course and agreed to the re-race to determine the second place finisher.
