April 6, 2001
Los Angeles, Calif. ---
The sixth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team handed top-ranked UCLA (16-1) its first loss of the season as the Cardinal improved to 14-1, 3-0 in the Pac-10 at the LA Tennis Center.
The Cardinal won the first point of the day by capturing two of three doubles matches. Senior Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) and junior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) claimed the doubles point at No. 1 after battling back from a 3-4 deficit to win 8-6. At the No. 2 spot, David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) and Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy) snagged a victory to secure the first doubles point.
The Bruins then made a push taking the first two singles matches, but the Cardinal proved too strong. Senior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) evened the match at two defeating Chris Sands, 6-3, 6-2. The next two matches were split, leaving Hippensteel at No. 2 to clinch the victory. UCLA's Marcin Matkowski forced a third set, but Hippensteel held on to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Stanford concludes this two-game road trip at #20 USC (11-5) on Saturday at noon (PT). The Trojans dropped a 4-2 home decision to #27 California (10-5) on Friday afternoon. The Cardinal's next home match is Tuesday, April 10 against the California Golden Bears at 5:00 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
