Arizona State Defeats UCLA In Pac-10 Home Opener
April 6, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Ninth-ranked Arizona State put a damper on UCLA softball's Pac-10 home opener on Friday afternoon, defeating the top-ranked Bruins by a 6-1 margin. The Sun Devils improve to 28-9, 3-1 Pac-10, while UCLA falls to 39-2 (2-2 Pac-10) with the loss.
Sun Devil second baseman Missy Hixon opened the game with a single up the middle, which turned out to be a sign of how the game would unfold. Designated player Erica Beach, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI on the afternoon, homered to lead off the second inning and doubled in the third inning, leaving her a triple shy of the cycle. ASU put two more runs across in the third inning on four hits, including a bases-loaded double by Beach.
UCLA got its first hit of the game when Natasha Watley singled to lead off the fourth inning. After a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Tairia Mims, catcher Stacey Nuveman crushed a ball down the left field line, but it was called foul as it skied over the left field foul pole. A single up the middle by designated player Courtney Dale scored Watley from second base, to make the score 3-1, but that was as close as the Bruins would get.
The Sun Devils added one more run on three straight singles to start the fifth inning, then would score two more as they opened the seventh with five straight singles, accounting for the final score of 6-1.
The top-ranked Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against No. 2 Arizona. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm at Easton Stadium in a game that will be broadcast live on FOX Sports West with Jim Watson and Angie Arlati calling the action. Sunday's game, also against the Wildcats, will be a 1 pm first pitch, and live audio will be broadcast on www.uclabruins.com.
