No. 5 Softball Blanks Visiting Oregon, 4-0

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 5 California Golden Bears snapped its season-long three game losing streak when it defeated the visiting Oregon Ducks, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fircke Field. The Bears improve to 40-4 on the year and pick up their first Pac-10 win to go to 1-3 in 2001. The Ducks fall to 23-23 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10.
Cal sent six runners to the plate in the second inning and scored a pair of runs to take the early 2-0 lead. In the inning, senior Paige Bowie singled up the middle to leadoff the inning followed by sophomore Eryn Manahan's double to left center to give Cal two runners in scoring position. Sophomore Jen Deering came up with two outs and singled up the middle to drive in Bowie and Manahan for the Bear's first two runs.
Cal kept the rally going in the third. Junior Candace singled to right with one out. Sophomore Veronica Nelson followed with a single to right center to move Harper to third. On the play, Nelson attempted to move to second but was thrown out at second on the play. With two outs, Bowie singled to left to bring home Harper and give the Bears a 3-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Bowie connected for her third hit in the game, this time a double down the right-field line. With Manahan at bat, Bowie stole second and came in to score on an error by the third baseman. Cal went into the seventh inning with the eventual final, 4-0.
Junior Jocelyn Forest held a no hitter through four innings for the Bears, but an Andrea Vidlund single through the left side of the infield broke up the no-no. She earned the win to improve to 21-3 on the year, with 15 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and a walk.
Anissa Meashintubby took the loss for the Ducks.
In addition to Bowie's 3-for-3 day, senior Pauline Dueï¿½as and Harper both had two hits apiece.
Vidlund had both hits for Oregon including a double in the seventh.
The Bears and the Ducks complete the two-game series tomorrow at Levine-Fricke Field at 1 p.m.
