UW Men's Tennis Defeats ASU for First Time in School History

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked University of Washington men's tennis team (17-5, 2-2) defeated Arizona State, 4-3, this afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center for its first victory over the Sun Devils in school history.
Washington lost the doubles point, losing in all three positions. Sun Devil duo Nic Dubey and Matt Klinger defeated Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac, 8-4. Jarrod Eckermann and Mitchell Bowen clinched the point for Arizona State, defeating Dillon Ruby and Ari Strasberg by a score of 9-7. In the third position, Husky duo Andrej Bizjak and Matt Hanlin were defeated 8-6 by Pim Van Mele and Olivier Charroin.
In singles action, play was extremely competitive as five out of the six matches went into a tiebreaker. Junior Matt Klinger was the first to secure the next point for Arizona State with the win over Andrej Bizjak in two sets, 7-5, 7-5. Playing in the No. 3 position, Jeremy Berman was defeated by No. 99 Mirza Duranovic, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5). The Huskies, now down 0-3, went on a huge run winning out in the No. 1, 4, 5, and 6 courts to clinch the victory. No. 36 Matt Hanlin outlasted Nic Dubey, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-0. Ari Strasberg took care of Olivier Charroin in three sets 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-5. Strasberg has now won 10 matches in a row. Playing in the No. 6 position, senior Marius Lunde defeated Jarrod Eckermann in two sets, 7-6(4), 7-5.
Next up for Washington will be a road trip to California to face the Bruins of UCLA and the Trojans of USC, Fri. and Sat., April 13 and 14.
