Women's Crew Battles Through Rough Day In San Diego
April 7, 2001
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's varsity eight finished sixth in their heat race at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday, finishing with a time of 6:44.39. The Beavers will race in the Petite Final (places 7-14) Sunday on the Mission Bay course.
A stuck oar about ten strokes out from the starting line left the OSU boat dead in the water, ending the race before it really got going for the Beavers. OSU got off the line quickly and raced well after getting started again, recovering enough to beat Duke, while Washington won the race in a time of 6:26.03.
The second varsity eight pounded the competition, as they finished second in their heat in 7:01.63 to qualify for Sunday's Grand Final. The Beavers finished just over five seconds behind Washington, cutting more than six seconds off the margin from last weekend's race against the Huskies.
A third-place finish was enough for the novice eight to qualify for the Grand Final as well, as OSU finished in 7:31.94, behind Virginia and Washington State, which crossed the line in 7:19.28.
In separate action, OSU sent boats to the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday as well. The varsity eight took third, coming home in 6:54, behind Washington and Western Washington. OSU raced three varsity fours, which finished second, third, and fifth in their races. OSU's second-place boat turned in a time of 7:28.
