Women's Tennis Improves To 18-0; Beats USC 7-0

STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford University women's team improved to 18-0 on the year and 7-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference with a convincing 7-0 win over 16th-ranked USC (13-6, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in its final home match of the regular season.
Stanford will now face 29th-ranked UCLA (5-12, 2-1) on Sunday at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in a make-up of Friday's match that was rained out.
The victory marked the Cardinal's second 7-0 win over the Women of Troy this season. Stanford also blanked USC in the quarterfinals of the National Team Indoor Championships on February 16 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Stanford swept all three doubles matches to capture the first point of the dual. At No. 1, top-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) posted a convincing 8-3 win over 12th-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson. Stanford's lone senior - Sarah Pestieau (New York, NY/Lycee Francais de New York) - teamed with Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS) to win 8-4 over Bernadette Bayani and Maureen Diaz at No. 3.
The Cardinal then captured four of the six singles matches in straight sets. Top-ranked Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) improved to 32-1 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over 13th-ranked Jewel Peterson at No. 1. The Cardinal also received straight set wins from Kalvaria, Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) and Tokuda.
