Diamond Dawgs Hold Off Hawaii-Hilo, 11-9.

HILO, Hawaii - The Washington baseball team held off Hawaii-Hilo in the late innings Sunday at WongStadium to notch an 11-9 win over the Vulcans and win the four-game, non-conferenceseries, three games to one. Washington improved to 18-11 with with win while UHH fellto 5-26.
Freshman starter Clay Johnson (4-2) threw seven innings for the victory. Johnson hadallowed only two hits through the first six innings before surrendering four in the seventh.He finished having allowed five runs on six hits while striking out five.
With the score tied at 2-2 after five innings, the Huskies rallied for four runs in the sixth.After singles from Michael Done and John Otness put runners at first and third, Donescored when Bryan Johnson's grounder was misplayed by third baseman Billy Rayl.
After an out, Otness scored on a single from Andre Marshall, who moved to second on athrow to put runners at second and third. Ben Miller followed with an infield single to thirdand Marshall scored all the way from second, catching the Vulcans asleep and givingWashington a 6-2 lead.
In the seventh, the Dawgs tacked on two more runs when Done belted a two-run homer toright-center field, his fourth home run of the season. Hilo closed the gap to 8-5 with threeruns in the seventh, but Jay Garthwaite's double drove in three with a double in the eighthto extend the lead back to six runs at 11-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hilo scored two more, highlighted by a solo homer by KeolaPark. The Vulcans posted two more in the ninth, but could only bring the tying run to theplate as UW closer Scott Robertson got a popout and a groundout to end the game with arunner on first.
Done, the Husky third baseman, finished the day 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Donefinished the series with 11 hits in 18 at bats. The Huskies also got two hits each fromGarthwaite, Marshall and Ben Johnson.
UHH starter Robert Shimabuku (1-8) suffered the loss for the Vulcans, allowing eight runs(only three earned) on 10 hits over seven innings.
The Huskies fly home Monday and take on St. Martin's Tuesday night at Husky Ballparkbefore travelling for a three-game, Thursday-through-Saturday series at UCLA. All ofthose games will air live on KSRB AM-1150 and on www.1150ksrb.com
