Men's Crew Sixth In San Diego

April 8, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - It turned out to be a successful weekend for all three Oregon State boats at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic, as the varsity, junior varsity, and novice eights all raced in their respective Grand Finals on Sunday.

The varsity boat crossed the line in sixth in a very tight seven-boat race. The 16th-ranked Beavers finished just two seats behind Yale with a time of 6:19. Cal won the race in 6:02, but places two-through-six were separated by just nine seconds, as Washington took second in 6:10, Penn third (6:15), and Wisconsin fourth (6:17).

The JV eight was fifth with a time of 6:29, finishing ahead of Orange Coast College and one second behind Yale and two seconds after Penn. Washington claimed the win in 6:11.

The freshmen made a strong case for the future success of the OSU program, as they took third with a 6:34 while racing in a choppy lane seven. The OSU boat found itself in the outside lane, which meant dealing with rougher conditions than other boats on the inside. Washington won in 6:15, and Cal was second in 6:19, while the Beavers finished well ahead of Orange Coast College, Cal-Santa Barbara, and Cal-Irvine.

'Our crews raced well this weekend,' OSU coach Dave Reischman commented. 'The freshmen handled rough water well in lane seven, and the JVs did what they had to do. They were within range of what are traditionally strong schools.

'It was the same case with the varsity also. It's hard to figure with this course, though, with some of the lanes getting more wind than others.'

OSU heads to Madison, Wisc., next Satruday to take on Wisconsin and Michigan in a three-way race.
