No. 16 Softball Shutout By No. 4 Stanford, 4-0

April 8, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 16 ranked Oregon State was shutout by No. 4 Stanford, 4-0, in Sunday's Pac-10 Conference softball action.

The loss drops OSU's overall record to 30-15-1 and 0-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Cardinal improves to 35-3-1 and 5-1 in the conference.

A big first inning doomed the Beavers as Stanford posted three runs in the skein. Junior Robin Walker started things off for the Cardinal with a leadoff single to centerfield. Jessica Mendoza followed with a walk to set up Sarah Beeson's two-run double to right-center field. Freshman Jessica Allister's bunt single to third base scored Beeson to give Stanford a 3-0 cushion.

Oregon State recorded just three hits in the contest and was unable to get any runs across the plate.

'We just didn't take advantage of the runners that we had on,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Brooke Rutschman and Shelly Prochaska both hit the ball extremely well but just didn't find the holes.'

Clare Burnum, Michelle Chariton and Traci Feldt each recorded a hit for the Beavers.

'Clare continued to swing a very consistent bat,' commented Walker.

Junior pitcher Crystal Draper suffered the loss to fall to 17-8 on the season. OSU's hurler allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six.

'Crystal did a nice job after the first inning of keeping their offense at bay,' added Walker.

The Beavers look to get back on the winning track Thursday with a double-header at Portland State. Game-one is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

'Overall, I felt our intensity was good and we played hard this weekend,' said Walker. 'We're definitely capable of being in a ball game and competing with a team of Stanford's caliber - and beating them.'
