April 9, 2001
BERKELEY - The start of the 2001-02 men's basketball season may be more than seven months away, but the Golden Bears are already predicted to be among the nation's elite teams next year.
CBS Sportsline.com has a pre-preseason Top 25 poll out, and Cal is ranked in the 20th spot. National champion Duke tops the poll, followed by Florida, Arizona, North Carolina and Maryland.
Cal, which finished 20-11 last season, reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997, but lost in the first round to Fresno State. The Bears return four starters for next year, losing only forward Sean Lampley.
To help replace the Pac-10 Player of the Year, head coach Ben Braun has signed a recruiting class that ranked among the Top 10 in the country according to several national rankings.
