Baseball Rallies With 6-4 Win Against UC Santa Barbara
April 10, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Brian Bannister pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to register his third win of the season Tuesday and the No. 9 USC Trojans defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 6-4, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans (24-12) have won nine of their last 11 games while the loss snapped the Gauchos' (25-9) six-game winning streak.
UCSB starter Matt Vasquez (4-2) had kept the Trojans off the scoreboard after allowing two runs in the first inning until three errors in the seventh led to four USC runs.
Jon Brewster reached first in the seventh on an error by second baseman Chad Peshke. Pinch-hitter Rob Garibaldi singled to left, advancing Brewster to second. Brian Barre then hit a chopper down the third base line. Vasquez threw the ball to third base, but third baseman Dave Molidor had come up after the ball. Brewster beat the throw from shortstop Jeff Bannon for the first run. Seth Davidson then reached on an error by Bannon, scoring Garibaldi to tie the game at 4-4.
A groundout by Anthony Lunetta advanced Barre and Davidson and Bill Peavey was intentionally walked to load the bases. Josh Persell hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Barre in what proved to be the game-winning run. Alberto Concepcion singled to left to plate Davidson to cap the four-run inning for the Trojans.
Fraser Dizard recorded his fourth save of the season with 1 1/3 perfect innings for the Trojans.
USC will travel to Berkeley for a Pac-10 series at California, beginning on Thursday (April 12) at 2:30 p.m. The series will continue on Friday (April 13) at 2:30 p.m. and conclude on Saturday (April 14) at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.
