Men's Golf Competes At Thunderbird Invitational

April 10, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal returns to the links after taking a week off following a strong showing at the Western Intercollegiate, where the Bears finished 5th. This week, Cal Coach Steve Desimone said that the team hopes to carry its momentum from two straight top-5 finishes to the Thunderbird Invitational at Arizona State University on April 13-14.

'We're looking forward to getting down there,' Desimone said. 'We've had high winds at our last two tournaments, so we're hoping the weather will hold up.'

Although the Bears struggled earlier this season at the John Burns Invitational and the Cleveland Golf Classic, Desimone said that the last two tournaments have shown what Cal is capable of accomplishing.

'We had a little dip, but for some reason we're historically not as strong in February and March,' he said. 'We usually pick it up as we head into April and that's the best time to be playing well.'

Cal finished 5th out of 18 teams at the Western Intercollegiate at San Jose State University on April 2-3. Walter Chun was the top finisher for the Bears, posting scores of 75-73-68. The three-round score of 216 was good enough to tie Chun for 10th place.

Freshman Peter Tomasulo shot a first-round 68 and finished the tournament with a score of 218, tying him for 17th place. Dong Yi scored 75-70-74 to tie for 22nd, Jesse Ruda shot a 74-73-78, tie-48th, and James Hahn posted a 75-74-77 and tied for 50th place.

Desimone has selected the following five players to represent Cal at the Thunderbird Invitational:

PLAYER YR	SPRING RDS	AVG	TOP FINISH1. Walter Chun Jr.	14 74.1	tie-9th2. Peter Tomasulo Fr. 14 73.9	tie-5th3. Dong Yi Sr.	14 74.1	tie-9th4. Jesse Ruda So.	14 73.9	tie-7th5. James Hahn So. 8 77.1 tie-21st

Cal Coach Desimone said that the top four spots in the Bears lineup are nearly solidified. Other than juggling the order, Desimone has played his top four golfers (Chun, Ruda, Yi and Tomasulo) in each tournament this season. Although the fifth spot changed from week to week early in the season, Hahn starts his third straight tournament at the position.
