Men's Tennis Lights Up California, 5-2

April 10, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team knocked off arch-rival California 5-2 on Tuesday night at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in the first-ever regular season night tennis match on The Farm. The Cardinal will try it again on Tuesday, April 17 as it hosts #8 Pepperdine at 4:00 p.m. as Cahin Company Realtors once again presents 'Twilight Tuesday'.

The Cardinal, which has won 10 in a row, is 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the Pac-10, while the 27th-ranked Golden Bears dropped to 10-7 and 2-3. Stanford can now clinch its fifth consecutive Pac-10 title with home wins over #30 Arizona State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and #48 Arizona on Saturday at noon as Deutsche Banc Alex.Brown Presents 'Pac-10 Weekend'.

Stanford used the same formula for success that it has throughout the long winning streak: strong doubles play and impressive performances at the top of the singles line-up. The Cardinal, which has four doubles teams ranked among the top 41 in the country, lost a combined total of only eight games in the three matches. At No. 1, 21st-ranked K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, CA/International Academy) and Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) won their fourth straight, and seventh in their last eight, by overpowering John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk 8-2.

Hippensteel and Kim also continued their torrid performances in singles play. The second-ranked (and defending NCAA Singles Champion) Kim won his 18th match in 20 tries this season by defeating the 28th-ranked Fruttero 6-3, 6-1. The 22nd-ranked Hippensteel, meanwhile, extended his personal winning streak to 14 matches by outlasting Kowalczyk 6-3, 7-6. Hippensteel has not lost since February 2, and is 12-1 against Pac-10 opposition this season.
