No. 6 Women's Tennis Falls to Top-Ranked Stanford, 6-1
April 10, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The No. 6-ranked Cal women's tennis team (13-3, 3-2 Pac-10) lost their first match in over a month when they went up against the best team in the country, the No. 1-ranked Stanford Cardinal (20-0, 9-0 Pac-10). Stanford ended Cal's nine match winning streak, while coming within one match of a shutout.
The Bears faltered early, losing all three doubles matches and surrendering the first point to the Cardinal. Stanford boasts the top two doubles tandems in the nation, although Cal certainly gave them trouble. The No. 16-ranked duo of Nicole Havlicek and Jieun Jacobs found their rhythm early, however they could not keep up the pressure against Stanford's Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra, losing to the Cardinal at the No. 2 spot, 8-4.
As singles started, the sun began to heat up the afternoon, as a gallery of people watched, hoping Cal could pull off a marvelous upset. Unless Cal meets Stanford in the post-season, they will have to wait until next year, as Stanford took five of six singles matches, four of those coming in straight sets, for the 6-1 victory.
Sekita Grant turned in the only point of the afternoon at No. 6, defeating Emilia Anderson, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Freshman Jieun Jacobs took the first set from Lauren Barnikow 6-3, yet faltered in the next two, eventually losing to Barnikow, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Call will head to Arizona for two Pac-10 match-ups, first with No. 49-ranked Arizona, Friday the 13th, before taking on No. 14-ranked ASU, Saturday, April 14 at 12 noon.
