For the first time this season, STANFORD became the unanimous No. 1 team in the country by all three baseball polls (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Baseball Weekly) ... With its series win over ARIZONA STATE, USC moves up in the polls, ranked No. 9 in Baseball America, No. 10 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 7 in the Baseball Weekly poll ... The Sun Devils drop to No. 15, 16 and 12 respectively.

In Conference play this weekend, the Cardinal looks to stay in first place hosting OREGON STATE. WASHINGTON STATE heads to Sun Devil country, while the Trojans visit CALIFORNIA. WASHINGTON plays at UCLA ... ARIZONA is the only team this weekend in non-conference action. The Wildcats host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

ARIZONA (23-17 Overall, 6-6 Pac-10)Last Week: at WSU W 14-11/14 inn., 11-7, L 14-17 This Week: Texas A&M-Corpus ChristiThe Wildcats won a highly offensive series against the Cougars. Both teams combined to score 74 runs in the three-game set ... Arizona took the first two games, including a wild 14-11 extra-inning win, in which the teams combined for 25 runs, 30 hits and nine errors ... The Wildcats lost the third game 14-17, despite sophomore 2B Matt Abram's performance at the plate. Abram, hit for the cycle and finished the game 5-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Abram became just the 10th Wildcat to hit for the cycle and only 21st Conference player to accomplish the feat. He was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for his efforts... Several other Wildcats also did well offensively, as evidenced by every starter getting a hit in Arizona's second victory in the series ... On the weekend, junior RF Shelley Duncan hit .600 (9-for-15), with three home runs, a double, eight RBI and eight runs scored. Duncan leads the Conference with 16 round-trippers.

ARIZONA STATE (22-11-1 Overall, 5-7 Pac-10)Last Week: at USC L 2-11, 1-5, W 11-1 This Week: at Cal State Fullerton, WSU

The Sun Devils mustered only three runs against Trojan pitching in the first two games of last weekend's series, before finding their bats in the final game prevailing, 11-1. By pulling out the victory on Sunday, ASU avoided the sweep and have now not been swept since April 1999 ... ASU broke the NCAA record by scoring a run in its 350th consecutive game on Saturday. Ironically, the last time the Sun Devils were shutout was exactly six years to the day also against USC at Dedeaux Field ... Senior C Casey Myers was one Sun Devil to do well at the plate in each game against USC. On the series, he hit at a .500 clip (6-for-12) with one RBI and two runs scored. He notched two multi-hit games, marking his 21st and 22nd multi-hit games this season. He now has 88 multi-hit games in his career ... Senior lefty Drew Friedberg continues to be a stopper out of the bullpen. He has allowed only 17 hits and four earned runs in 29.1 innings, while striking out 32 batters. He is good for a 1.23 ERA and of the 12 base runners he has inherited, only four have scored ... ASU is leading the Conference batting .339. The Sun Devils are also tops in on base percentage (.442), doubles (85), walks (180) and stolen bases (76).

CALIFORNIA (20-16 Overall, 6-6 Pac-10)Last Week: San Francisco W 2-1/10 inn., at OSU L 5-6, 1-10, W 12-1 This Week: at San Jose State, USC

The Bears fell in their first two games to the Beavers, but again disrupted the sweep by erupting for a 12-1 victory on Sunday. Cal's sure-fire offense has now come alive for the fourth straight Sunday. In those games the Bears have outscored their Pac-10 opponents, 55-14 ... With Oregon State taking the opening game of the series, 6-5, Cal has now been involved in 14 one-run contests, going 5-9 in those games ... Senior righty David Cash pitched well in two appearances against the Beavers. Cash got Cal's lone win in the series after pitching four relief innings allowing no earned runs or walks, with three strikeouts. He also threw 1.2 innings in the first game, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Cash is 7-2 on the season with three saves, a 3.11 ERA and team-best 60 K's ... Cal's pitching staff is second-best in the Conference with a 3.53 ERA ... Sophomore IF Ben Conley hit his first collegiate home run ... Freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich did well against Oregon State going 6-for-10 with a double, home run, one RBI and four runs scored ... Cal plays at San Jose State, before hosting USC this weekend.

OREGON STATE (21-13 Overall, 5-4 Pac-10)Last Week: California W 6-5, 10-1, L 1-12 This Week: Portland, at Stanford

Oregon State notched its second consecutive Pac-10 series win at home last weekend against Cal ... Backed by strong pitching and sophomore LF Chris Biles' clutch hit, the Beavers won the first game, 6-5. Biles singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior RHP Thad Johnson had a career-high 14 strikeouts and held the Bears to only three earned runs on eight hits ... In the Beavers' second win over the Bears, senior lefty Scott Nicholson had an impressive outing. He pitched his fourth straight complete game, allowing only one run on seven hits, while fanning three ... The Beavers brought their bats out in the first two games, pounding out a combined 32 hits. Oregon State has had at least 10 hits in a game 23 times this season, and 15 hits or more in a game 10 times ... Sophomore 1B Andy Jarvis and junior RF Josh Carter are making moves in the OSU record books. Jarvis, with home runs in two consecutive games, moved into a tie for eighth place on the Beavers' single-season chart. He now has 11 four-baggers on the season. By knocking out his 35th career double, Carter pushed himself into a tie for fourth on OSU's all-time doubles list ... Junior C Bryan Ingram continues on a 12-game hitting streak.

STANFORD (27-7 Overall, 7-2 Pac-10)Last Week: at San Jose State W 5-3/10 inn., UCLA L 4-6, W 9-0, 11-2 This Week: at Nevada, OSU

For the first time in 2001, the Cardinal is the unanimous No. 1 pick by all three baseball polls (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Baseball Weekly) . This is the fifth consecutive week Stanford has been atop the Baseball America poll ... With two wins over the Bruins last weekend, Stanford has now won 16 straight regular-season series, including nine consecutive Pac-10 series, dating back to last season ... The Cardinal has won 13 of its last 15 games ... Due to a rain out Friday night, Stanford and UCLA split a doubleheader on Saturday ... The Cardinal was held to only four runs against the Bruins in the first game, but blanked UCLA for a 9-0 victory in the second game, behind junior RHP Jeff Bruksch's pitching performance. Bruksch pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up only six hits, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Stanford has recorded six shutouts this season and Bruksch was the starting pitcher in four of them. He was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year ... Stanford continues to lead the Conference in pitching (2.76 ERA) and fielding (.978) ... In the final game of the series, the Cardinal were a tough out in the batters box. Both junior OF Jason VanMeetren and freshman OF Sam Fuld collected three hits on the day, to extend their career-high hitting streaks. Both players have hit safely in 11 games, while junior 3B Andy Topham is riding a 14-game hitting streak.

UCLA (21-11 Overall, 4-5 Pac-10)Last Week: Pepperdine W 11-3, at Stanford W 6-4, L 0-9, 2-11 This Week: at San Diego St., Washington

The Bruins won the first game of their doubleheader against Stanford and handed Cardinal Jeremy Guthrie his first loss. UCLA's Josh Karp picked up his third win of the season. The junior right-hander pitched five shutout innings, allowing just five hits, while fanning six batters. Sophomore RHP Doug Silva notched his second save of the season after striking out three and allowing no runs or hits through 1.1 innings pitched ... The Bruins also picked up an 11-3 victory over No. 19 Pepperdine in a midweek contest ... Two of the Bruins top batters extended their hitting streaks at Stanford. Senior 2B Josh Canales hit safely in 15 games, before going 0-for-3 in the final game of the series. Senior DH Brian Baron is riding an 11-game hitting streak ... Baron continues to be the constant spark in UCLA's offense. He leads the nation with a .519 batting average, and is on pace to break UCLA's single-season hits record of 112. Baron currently has 67 hits on the season, along with 11 doubles and 28 RBI. Two other impressive statistics are his six four-hit games and that he has only struck out eight times all year. He paces the Pac-10 in average, hits and on base percentage (.557) ... The Bruins play a midweek game at San Diego State before hosting Washington. These games mark the first home Pac-10 series UCLA has played since the Conference season began. The Bruins are 12-4 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

USC (23-12 Overall, 6-3 Pac-10)Last Week: at San Diego St. W 2-1/10 inn., ASU W 11-2, 5-1, L 1-11 This Week: UC Santa Barbara, at Cal

USC took two of three games from Arizona State at home last weekend ... Starting pitchers Mark Prior and Rik Currier were key in those wins, holding Sun Devil batters to only one run apiece in their outings. In the opening game, Prior allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out seven to record his fourth straight victory. The junior righty has lowered his ERA to 1.34, good for seventh in the nation. He leads the country in strikeouts per nine innings (13.3) and is tied for second with nine wins. In Saturday's game, Currier allowed one run in 7.1 innings pitched. He scattered eight hits and struck out seven batters ... USC's pitchers were given a nice cushion of runs in their outings. Junior DH Bill Peavey, senior SS Seth Davidson and sophomore 2B Anthony Lunetta each had multiple hits in USC's 11-2 Friday night win. Lunetta pounded out another multi-hit performance in Saturday's game, along with senior Abel Montanez, junior RF Rob Garibaldi and junior CF Brian Barre ... The Trojans have won eight of their last 10 games ... USC takes on UC Santa Barbara at Dedeaux Field for a midweek game before heading up the coast to play Cal.

WASHINGTON (18-11 Overall, 2-7 Pac-10)Last Week: Pacific Lutheran W 4-3, at Hawaii-Hilo W 9-0, 10-7, L 5-6, W 11-9 This Week: St. Martin's College, at UCLA

After going 4-6 in its previous 10 games, Washington went 4-1 in non-conference games last week. The Huskies picked up a midweek victory against Pacific Lutheran, and took three out of four games at Hawaii-Hilo ... Junior RHP Shawn Kohn picked up his first win as a starter, throwing a two-hit shutout in his second career start. Kohn struck out eight batters and walked only three in a game called after eight innings due to rain. Kohn is now 3-0 on the season with a 1.29 ERA. He is 24-6, in strikeouts-to-walks in 28 innings pitched ... Washington outscored Pacific Lutheran and Hawaii-Hilo, 40-25 ... Junior 3B Michael Done was strong offensively for the Huskies. In the five games last week he hit .524 (11-for-21) with six runs scored, four RBI and a home run ... Junior DH Ben Miller also did well in the Hawaii-Hilo series, recording seven hits, six runs and three RBI with a double, triple and two stolen bases. He went 5-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Friday's game ... The Huskies are third in the Pac-10 in batting, hitting at a .313 clip. Washington can boast giving up the least number of two-baggers in the Conference. The team has allowed only 42 doubles, while hitting 65 of their own ... Washington plays a midweek game against St. Martin's College before heading down the coast for a three-game set at UCLA.

WASHINGTON STATE (12-21 Overall, 4-5 Pac-10)Last Week: Arizona L 11-14/10 inn, 7-11, W 17-14 This Week: at Arizona State

Washington State kept up with Arizona's offensive pace in the first two games of the series, but did not pull out a win until the final game. The win pulled the Cougars from a four-game slump... Senior RF Mike Knight's grand slam capped an explosive nine-run fifth inning in Friday's game, but the Cougars couldn't hold on to their lead and lost, 11-14 in 10 innings. In the next game, Washington State got 3-for-5 performances from both Adrian Thomas and Tyson Boston. The junior outfielders combined to drive in three of the Cougars' seven runs in their 11-7 losing contest ... In 33 games this season, only 18 have been determined by more than two runs. The Cougars are 2-7 in games determined by three or four runs ... In WSU's nine Conference games, the team is batting .354. Thomas is the Cougars' top hitter in those Pac-10 contests, with a .581 average. He currently has an eight-game hitting streak. Junior SS Bookie Gates is also hitting over .500 (.512) in Pac-10 games ... Last weekend a game was delayed nearly an hour due to a mixture of rain and snow. WSU can rest assured that will be unlikely to happen again this weekend, as the Cougars travel to the desert to take on Arizona State.
