April 11, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal dominated the Pac-10 All-Academic team released Wednesday with Golden Bears holding three of the five first team spots.

Senior guard Morgan Lingle and junior guards Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Dennis Gates all received first team recognition. In addition, sophomore guard Donte Smith was an honorable mention pick.

Lingle, who has a 3.62 GPA, will graduate this May with his bachelor's degree in economics, while Forehan-Kelly has a 3.02 GPA as an American studies major. Though only a junior, Gates will graduate later this spring in sociology with a 3.08 GPA. He will compete next season as a graduate student in education. Smith has a 3.35 GPA as an undeclared major.

Dave Butler, in both 1986 and '87, is the only other Cal player ever to receive first team academic status from the Pac-10.

The 2001 All-Academic selections come on the heels of the Cal football team receiving 16 nods, including four first-teamers, also the most of any school in the Pac-10.
