Women's Tennis Travels To Washington State, Washington

This Week -- 19th-ranked USC women's tennis (14-6, 2-2 Pac-10) hits the road again this week, traveling to Washington State and Washington. The Trojans face the 30th-ranked Cougars (10-6, 3-5 Pac-10) on Friday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m., then battle the 13th-ranked Huskies (16-6, 6-1 Pac-10) on Saturday, April 14, at noon. Both matches will count against conference records.
Sorting Out Pac-10 Matches -- As of April 6 the Pac-10-counting matches have been officially adjusted. The USC-Cal match played in Los Angeles on April 21 will be an official conference match due to the rain cancellation of the April 6 match in Berkeley. The USC-Stanford match played on Saturday, April 7, will count against Pac-10 records. The match in Los Angeles will not.
ITA Rankings -- The Women of Troy enter the week at No. 19 according to the ITA. In singles, Jewel Peterson ranks 13th and Maureen Diaz 76th. In doubles, Tiffany Brymer and Peterson are 16th, Melissa Esmero and Anita Loyola rank 50th.
USC News & Notes -- With its second win over UCLA on March 30, the Trojans swept the Bruins for the first time since 1988... The Trojans have not lost a match this season after winning the doubles point (13-0 after winning doubles point)... Maureen Diaz owns the team's best record so far with a 25-7 mark and .781 win percentage... This year's roster features no seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen... USC's top-six are all underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores).
USC vs. Washington State, Washington -- USC has never lost a match to either Washington State or Washington. The Trojans are 6-0 against the Cougars and 8-0 against the Huskies all-time. Last season the Women of Troy defeated WSU 6-3 and UW 5-4 at home.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC fell to top-ranked Stanford 7-0 on April 7 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford. It is the Trojans' second 7-0 loss to the Cardinal this season after facing Stanford in the quarterfinals of the National Team Indoor Championships on February 16 in Madison, Wisc. Stanford swept all three doubles matches to capture the first point of the dual. The Cardinal then captured four of the six singles matches in straight sets to ensure the afternoon victory.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his sixth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2000 Trojans to a 18-9 overall record, a No. 11 final team ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last nine years, he has compiled a 154-84 (.647) overall record and his teams have made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
