Men's Tennis Heads To The Bay Area

ON TAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team (9-9, 3-2 Pac-10) will close out the Pac-10 season as they travel to the Bay Area to face fourth-ranked Stanford (16-1, 5-0 Pac-10) on Friday, April 13 at 1:30 p.m. ASU will then cross over and take on California (10-7, 2-3 Pac-10) on Saturday, April 14 at 12:00 p.m.
A LOOK BACK: The Sun Devils spilt their last pair of home games as they defeated Oregon, 5-2 and fell 4-3 to 12th-ranked Washington. Against Oregon, ASU took the early advantage by winning all three of doubles matches for the first point. ASU's tandem of Nic Dubey and Matt Klinger claimed the first match on the No. 1 court with an 8-4 victory. Jarrod Eckermann and Mitchell Bowen won the doubles point on the second court with an 8-6 victory. In singles action, ASU won four of the six matches. On the No. 2 court, Klinger dispatched Oregon's Martin Pawlowski, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Mirza Duranovic improved his overall record to 24-8 with a 7-6 (7), 6-2 victory on the No. 3 court. On courts 4 and 5, Pim Van Mele and Olivier Charroin failed to drop a set as they defeated their opponents, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-5, respectively. Against UW, the Sun Devils jumped out early again by winning all three doubles matches for the first point. ASU's tandem of Dubey and Klinger claimed the first match on the No. 1 court with an 8-4 win. For the second straight dual, Eckermann and Bowen won the doubles point on the second court with a 9-7 victory. ASU's third doubles victory came on the No. 3 court where Van Mele and Charroin won. In singles action, it came down to the wire for both teams. Klinger was the first to claim a match, defeating Washington's Andrej Bizjak on the No. 2 court, 7-5, 7-5. On the No. 3 court, Duranovic notched his 25th win of the season by defeating Jeremy Berman, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (5). However, Washington mustered enough strength to defeat ASU on courts 1, 4, 5 and 6 to seal the victory. As the dual came to a close, courts 1 and 5 would be the determining factors, as both courts went to three sets. Washington's Matt Hamlin outlasted Dubey on the No. 1 court, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-0, while ASU's Charroin fell to the Huskies' Ari Strasberg, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5.
SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Junior Matt Klinger jumped up several spots as he now checks in at #62. Mirza Duranovic cracked the top-100 for the first time as he comes in at #99. The next team ranking will be released on April 18, while the singles and doubles will be released on April 20.
HEAD COACH LOU BELKEN: In his 19th season as head coach, Lou Belken has produced 14 All-Americans, including NCAA singles champion and ATP professional Sargis Sargsian. Belken, the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and Region VIII Coach of the Year, has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA postseason berths in nine of the last 13 seasons, including a berth into the NCAA round of 16 in 1999.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Nic Dubey and junior Mirza Duranovic each achieved their 80th career singles victory against LMU ... junior Matt Klinger holds a .706 career winning percentage in singles, recording a 60-25 mark ... Klinger has also tied his career-high with 21 victories ... this is Duranovic's third straight year of reaching at least 20 wins ... six of ASU's nine losses have been by just one point ... the dual against fourth-ranked Stanford will be Arizona State's 10th dual against a top-25 team this year and the ninth dual against a team ranked in the top-13.
