Baseball Loses 4-3 Squeaker to Arizona State

April 13, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State right fielder Nick Walsh led off the seventh inning with a solo home run off WSU reliever Nick Kenyon to lead the Sun Devils to a 4-3 win over the Cougar baseball team Friday night at Packard Stadium. The Cougars fall to 13-23 (5-6 in Pac-10) for the season while the Sun Devils improved to 23-13-1 (6-8).

Walsh's home run spoiled what had been another good Cougar pitching effort against the nationally-ranked Sun Devils. Cougar starter Zach Fisher pitched the first three and a third innings and allowed only one run on a pair of hits but walked seven batters. Kenyon pitched the next three innings and gave up two runs on four hits but no walks, but Walsh's home run was enough to drop the junior reliever to 0-3.

Stefan Bailie drove in Washington State's first with a single to right field, scoring Adrian Thomas, who came around from second to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

In the fourth inning and down 2-1, the Cougs attempted a double steal with Jon Baeder heading for second and Tanner Kahler trying to steal home, but Kahler was tagged out ASU catcher Casey Myers at the plate ended the threat as well as the inning. Adrian Thomas hit his fourth home run of the year over the left field fence in the fifth inning to give WSU a 3-2 lead, driving in Van Delos Santos who began the inning with a walk.

After the relieving Mike Esposito in the fifth, ASU reliever Andy Torres kept Cougar bats at bay by not allowing a run while surrendering only two hits through the last five innings. Torres also struck out seven Cougar hitters, including right fielder Justin Williams to end the game, and recorded his ninth win of the year.

The rubber game for the Cougars and Sun Devils will be Saturday April 14, with the start scheduled for 12 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
