Seth Davidson led off the game with a triple to center that bounced under the glove of Ben Conley and rolled to the wall. He would score on a groundout by Brian Barre, giving the Trojans an early 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears, however, bounced back with a run in the first, second and third innings California had the bases loaded in the first with a run in and one out, but Currier struck out Spencer Wyman and got Clint Hoover to ground out to third, ending the inning. California stranded 11 runners on the afternoon.

Dennis had retired 11 straight batters after allowing the triple to Davidson, but the Trojans won the game in the fifth with four runs. Alberto Concepcion walked and Bill Peavey and Abel Montanez both singled to load the bases. Freshman Jon Brewster delivered a two-run single to right to tie the game at 3-3. Michael Moon reached on an error by second baseman Carson White to load the bases again. Davidson walked to score the eventual game-winning run and Brian Barre completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.

California had one final chance in the ninth with runners at first and second with two outs, but Dizard got White to fly out to center to end the game.
