April 13, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State men's golf team came out of the gates strong in the opening round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational on Friday by shooting 289, but faltered in the afternoon's second round with a 300. OSU is in 19th at 589 with 18 holes to play Saturday morning.

All-America candidate Anthony Arvidson led the Beavers with an even-par 142 at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State University.

The competition at the ASU tournament is the best OSU has seen so far this year, as 10 of the 22 teams are among the top 25 in the nation. Three are in the top eight.

Both Arvidson and David Yarnes opened with 68s in the morning round, but slowed down in the second round, as Arvidson carded a 74 and Yarnes posted a 75 for a 1-over 143. Arvidson, who has a string of 11 straight top-25 finishes, is tied for 28th, while Yarnes is in a group tied for 32nd.

The 68s for Arvidson and Yarnes were their lowest scores of the year.

The rest of the Beavers had some difficulties on Friday, as Michael Jurgensen and Todd Deacon shot 150 and 155, respectively. Jurgensen went out in 76 and came home in 74, while Deacon carded rounds of 77 and 78. Daren Grieg shot 162.

Fourth-ranked Texas leads the team competition with a score of 554, as no Longhorn was worse than par after two rounds. USC's Kevin Stadler leads the race for medalist honors after posting a 7-under 135, just ahead of teammate Nick Jones and Pepperdine's Jason Allred, who shot 136.
