Men's Golf Struggles At Thunderbird Invitational

April 13, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - After two straight top-5 finishes, the Cal men's golf team struggled on a course head coach Steve Desimone said does not suit the Bears.

Arizona State University's Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7027 yards) characteristically caters to teams that shoot well under par. Cal, Desimone added, is a team that relies on consistently shooting near par.

On Monday, that proved true as the Bears had three players tied at 1-over-par. While Dong Yi (+2) and J.R. Ruda (+3), rounded out the Cal team.

After two rounds, Cal is in 12th place (of 22 teams) after shooting a 286-291. The University of Texas leads the field with first-day scores of 284-270.

Individually, Kevin Stadler of USC leads the pack after posting a 68 and 67 (-9).
