Olympian Stitts Named First Team Pac-10 All-Academic

BERKELEY - Cal was well represented on the winter sports Pac-10 All-Academic teams released Friday, with 14 student-athletes receiving first or second team status in women's gymnastics and men's and women's swimming.
Senior Pari Olver earned second team honors in gymnastics with a 3.43 GPA in business administration. In addition, six others gained honorable mention recognition: Lindsay Baker, Genine Ishino, Kristine Kaibara, Janet McKnight, Katreece Stone and Jarmine Yeh.
In men's swimming, Cal had four on the first team academic squad and six on the second team, more than any other school in the conference. Representing the Bears on the first team are: junior Maciej Murny (3.38 GPA in history), senior Ryan Gruver (3.52 in anthropology and rhetoric), junior Jooyoung Lee (3.43 in political science) and junior Bruce Vogelgesang (3.37 in material science and engineering). The second team members are: sophomore Nicolas Bartolotta (3.18 in undeclared), senior Scott Greenwood (3.14 in American studies), sophomore Matthew Messmer (3.08 in undeclared), junior Hironori Sakoda (3.00 in undeclared), senior Dustin Shawnego (3.04 in economics) and junior George Wilkinson (3.01 in integrative biology).
Sophomore Staciana Stitts, an Olympic gold medalist in Sydney, earned first team honors in women's swimming with a 3.61 GPA as an undeclared major. Junior Alice Henriques (3.52 in economics) and sophomore Jamie Westoby (3.63 in undeclared) were voted second team. Receiving honorable mention status were: Haley Cope, Christina Flynn, Liah Kim and Emily Schum.
Earlier this week, the men's basketball team placed three players on the Pac-10 All-Academic first team, while the women's basketball squad had one player on the conference second team.
