Oregon Softball Sweeps San Jose State

EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team (25-24) went above .500 after sweeping San Jose State Friday afternoon at Howe Field. The Ducks made short work of the Spartans in Game 1, needing just five innings to pick up the 9-1 win. Oregon continued its dominance in Game 2, winning 4-1.

'I am extremely happy with the way we played today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We were prepared and were able to sustain that through two games. Now we need to focus on doing the same tomorrow.'

Oregon hosts Oregon State in a Pac-10 doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon. Fox Sports will broadcast the first game at 3 p.m.

Oregon sophomore Lisa Wangler improved to 5-6 with the win in the first game. Wangler held the Spartans scoreless through four innings and allowed just one hit and had five strike outs. Offensively, Wangler went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

The Ducks scored their first run in the bottom of the second when Amber Hutchison singled to center field to score senior Triawn Custer. Oregon continued its rally in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to take a hefty 5-0 lead. Sophomore Andrea Vidlund doubled to center field to score third baseman Lynsey Haij and Custer followed with a single to right field that scored shortstop Alyssa Laux. Vidlund went on to score on a fielder's choice and senior Kelly Planche topped off the inning with an RBI single to right field that scored Custer.

Oregon junior Missy Coe hit a two run home run in the fourth inning and freshman Kate Peterson followed with a two run walk off home run in the fifth inning.

In Game 2 it was the Spartans who scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Oregon held San Jose State scoreless for the remainder of the game and responded in the fifth inning, scoring two runs. The Ducks extended the lead in the sixth by scoring two more runs.

Freshman Anissa Meashintubby (3-1) picked up the win and improved her ERA to 2.70. The Ducks had 10 hits in the second game and gave up just three.
