Women's Basketball Signs Arizona Prep Standout

April 13, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team signed 5-foot-6 guard Catherria Turner (Tucson, Ariz./Amphitheatre High) to a national letter of intent.

Turner averaged a triple-double her senior year at Amphitheatre High, scoring 29 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and swiping 10 steals per game. She earned Player of the Year honors in the state from the Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Citizen.

A first-team all-state selection by the Arizona Republic, Turner also led the state in scoring and steals last season along with averaging 4.7 assists per game.

'I just watched her play this past weekend,' Oregon coach Jody Runge said. 'Catherria's a great athlete. She's going to be a great addition to our program as a young point guard. She can shoot it and handle it. She's quick and she can pressure shots on the defensive end.'

A member of the varsity squad as a freshman, Turner started every game for Amphitheatre and helped her team to back-to-back Southern Conference championships her first two years. However, as a junior she tore both her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her left knee during a game in November 1999. Following her sophomore season, Turner achieved first-team all-conference and all-city honors and was picked honorable mention all-state. As a freshman, she was a second-team all-conference selection and Turner's teammates voted her the 'Best Defensive' player.

Turner adds depth to Oregon's back court which also returns 2000 Pac-10 Player of the Year Shaquala Williams, senior Edniesha Curry and juniors Alissa Edwards and Kourtney Shreve.

'She's going to have to get stronger,' Runge said. 'She's young, but she's got a lot of talent and will have some opportunities to see the court.'

Turner completes the Ducks' outstanding recruiting class of six incoming freshmen who will join Oregon for the 2001-02 season. The five players who signed last fall are center Andrea Bills (Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley High), guard Brandi Davis (La Habra, Calif./Sonora High), guard Kedzie Gunderson (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue High), forward Amy Parrish (Hanford, Calif./Hanford High) and guard Amy Taylor (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood High).
