Arvidson 15th at ASU Invitational, Men's Golf ties for 19th

April 14, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - - Anthony Arvidson rang up another top-25 finish for the Oregon State men's golf team on Saturday, as the senior from Beaverton fired a final-round 69 at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course to earn a tie for 15th in the Arizona State/Thunderbird Invitational.

The Beavers tied for 19th, as they wrapped up the 54-hole tournament with a 292 in the final round to finish tied with Oregon at 881. Last year, the Beavers shot just one stroke better at 880, but finished 10th. This year's field was the strongest OSU has faced this year, as 10 of the nation's top 25 teams competed, including three of the top 10.

Arvidson, who led the Beavers in scoring average coming into the tournament at 72.8, shot his sixth round under par this season with his 69 on Saturday and kept his streak of top-25 finishes alive at 12.

OSU also got a consistent tournament from junior transfer David Yarnes, who shot even-par 72 Saturday to tie for 35th at 215. Yarnes was 1-under for the tournament.

Michael Jurgensen, a sophomore transfer from Denmark, shot 225 over the 54 holes, including a final-round 75, which is right on his average for the year.

Todd Deacon and Daren Grieg shot 234 and 238, respectively. Deacon finished with a 79, while Grieg wrapped up his 54 holes with a 76.

OSU plays in the Stanford Intercollegiate April 21-22 before heading back to Stanford for the Pacific-10 Conference Championships April 27-29.

No. 8 Arizona State defended its team title, as the Sun Devils wracked up an impressive 25-under total of 839 to secure the win over No. 4 Texas by four shots. ASU closed the tournament by shooting 12-under 276 on the final day.

Oklahoma State's Anders Hultman went into double digits to win medalist honors, as he cruised through the three rounds in 10-under par 206 to win by one shot over Arizona's Ricky Barnes.
